The Burning

Tower of smoke. It is here. The forest begins to purge itself, simply because it must.

Most birds make it out. They can fly. The bears who are awake and focused manage to save their cubs.

The leopards and lions flee as fast as the deer, as do the rabbits and the foxes.

Some insects die. Others swarm and fly away in massive clouds. Worms burrow further into the ground, deep where the heat cannot reach. Moles try the same and are killed by the smoke filling their caverns.

Not everything survives. Many are lost.

The snakes barely make it out. Most are dead, because they crawl on the ground, or are trampled by others in the panic.

A few snakes survive, only because of the kindness of owls, who all decide that they must carry the snakes.

A few owls die.

It is a shame that snakes are so easily startled.
